Hoe kan een agrarische transitie – die van monoculturele wisselbouw naar natuurinclusieve strokenteelt – op een artistieke manier vorm en gestalte krijgen. Dit gaat uiteraard niet van vandaag op morgen maar stapsgewijs. Op een akker die beheerd wordt door Stichting De Hangar ontwikkelt en begeleidt Frank Bruggeman een traject dat zich over meerdere jaren uitstrekt.

Het project SPILL agendeerde in 2022 het fenomeen van akkerrandverrijking en had als doel een hogere biodiversiteit te creëren. In 2023 werd met het project IMPACT een kratervormig hügelbed aangelegd. Daarmee werd een tuinbouwmethode beproefd waarbij biomassa uit de directe omgeving voor een gezonder bodemleven en een betere retentie van regenwater moeten zorgen.

Dit jaar start het driejarige project SHIFT dat zich richt op de transitie van de gehele akker waarbij experimenten voor een toekomstbestendig teeltplan worden uitgevoerd. Bij al deze drie projecten werd en wordt tevens in artistieke zin verbinding gelegd met het oorlogsverleden van de hangar als onderdeel van Fliegerhorst Deelen, al zal hier in de komende jaren steeds minder de nadruk op komen te liggen.

Alle genoemde projecten wortelen in de zogenaamde crop-art traditie maar hebben tevens duidelijke participatieve elementen. De akker fungeert als ‘commons’ voor bewoners en omwonenden van Buitenplaats Koningsweg. Ook worden workshops en evenementen georganiseerd die zich richten op een breed publiek van geïnteresseerden in kunst, agrarische transitie en ‘biobased materials’.

How can an agricultural transition – from large scale crop rotation to eco-friendly strip cropping – be given shape in an artistic way. This transition will not happen overnight, but step by step. On a crop field leased by the The Hangar Foundation, Frank Bruggeman develops and supervises a process that extends over several years.

In 2022, the poject SPILL aimed to create a higher biodiversity by introducing flower strips in the crop field. In 2023, the project IMPACT revolved around a crater-shaped, raised ‘hügelkultur’ plant bed. This is an horticultural method in which compostable biomass from the immediate environment is used for improving soil fertility and rainwater retention.

This year will be the first of the project SHIFT (2024-2026), which must eventually lead to the transition of the entire crop field. Several experiments will be carried out for a sustainable cultivation plan. All mentioned projects are also referring to the wartime history of this crop field, that was part of Fliegerhorst Deelen.

Where the 2022 and 2023 projects had a rather strong artistic emphasis on this, the multi-year project SHIFT will no longer put wartime events that central.
All mentioned projects are rooted in the crop-art tradition, but also have clear participatory elements. The crop field is a ‘commons’ for residents and neighbours of Koningsweg estate. Furthermore workshops and events are organized for people interested in art, agricultural transition and biobased materials.
