NATUREOBJECT #19

| NL Natureobject #19 is een botanisch en cultureel verslag van het verbijf van een week in Los Angeles. Het object bestaat o.a. uit restanten van de vele palmbomen die in de stad groeien. Deze palmbomen zijn iconisch voor LA, maar de vraag is hoe lang dat zo zal blijven, want een kever en een schimmel zijn levensbedreigende plagen. In deze assemblage zitten ook gedroogde bloemen en een plastic buxusstruik van de plaatselijke Home Depot-winkel. Zeer karakteristiek voor het gebied zijn ook de talrijke vetplanten en cactussen in grote formaten. Als beeldbepalend onderdeel zijn fragmenten van deze inheemse exoten verwerkt, maar ook een afgedankte autoband en afzettingsmaterialen voor wegenonderhoud die deze voor de auto ontworpen stad karakteriseren. |
EN Natureobject #19 is a botanical and cultural account of a week’s stay in Los Angeles. The object consists, among other things, the remains of the many palm trees that grow in the city. These palm trees are iconic to LA, but the question is how long they will remain that way, because a beetle and a fungus are life-threatening pests. Also included in this assembly are dried flowers and a plastic boxwood bush from the local Home Depot store. Very characteristic of the area are the numerous succulents and cacti in large sizes. Fragments of these native exotic species have been incorporated as a defining element, as well as a discarded car tire and barrier materials for road maintenance that characterize this city designed for the car. |
