IZNIK GREEN

Flowers are the dominant decoration pattern of the beautiful ceramic tiles and faience pottery from Iznik (Turkey). Blue, white and red – in that order – are the colors most often used. Green is a distinctly subordinate color. In my perception this is a bit strange because every flower is essentially part of a green plant. During my first stay at the Iznik Foundation Ateliers, I have made a walk around the area exploring all the green natural and not so natural colors. I also did a few tests with green glazes. At a next visit to the Ateliers, I want to make an installation that differs in shape as well as in color with tradional pottery.

 

Bloemen vormen het dominante decoratiepatroon van het oogstrelende tegel- en aardewerk uit Iznik (Turkije). Daarbij zijn blauw, wit en rood – in die volgorde – de kleuren die traditioneel het vaakst worden toegepast. Groen is een duidelijk ondergeschikte kleur, wat eigenlijk raar is omdat elke bloem in wezen onderdeel is van een groene plant. Tijdens mijn eerste verblijf in het atelier van de Iznik Foundation heb ik een rondgang in de omgeving gemaakt op zoek naar groene natuurlijke en onnatuurlijke kleuren. Ook heb ik een aantal proeven genomen met groene glazuren. Bij een volgend bezoek aan het atelier wil ik een beeld maken dat zowel in vorm als in kleur breekt met de traditie.
