Aan de oever van de Schelde ligt het vestingdorpje Lillo, waar zo’n 30 mensen wonen. De komende jaren wordt Lillo-Fort grootscheeps op de schop genomen. De ringgracht en de vestingwerken worden gereconstrueerd en in ere hersteld terwijl het jachthaventje en de bijbehorende gebouwen zullen worden weg gebulldozerd. Hopelijk ontkomt deze dadelpalm aan dat lot. Het zou leuk zijn als deze subtropische exoot nog een poosje de herinnering in stand mag houden van de watersportgenoegens die hier werden beleefd.

On the banks of the Scheldt lies the fortified village of Lillo, where about 30 people live. In the coming years, Lillo-Fort will undergo a major overhaul. The fortifications and moats will be reconstructed and restored, while the small marina and associated buildings will be bulldozed away. Hopefully this subtropical date palm will be spared. It would be nice if this exotic tree could preserve the memory of the pleasures that were experienced here by small boat owners.
