ESSENTIAL PLANTSCAPE

| NL Afstand houden is staande praktijk in het corona-tijdperk. Zoenen, knuffelen en zelfs handen schudden is taboe. Wat die nieuwe praktijk heeft bewerkstelligd is dat we allemaal onaanraakbaar zijn geworden. Onaanraakbaarheid, hoewel van geheel andere aard, is ook het motief van de drie schervenvazen die Boijmans Van Beuningen in 2018 heeft aangekocht. Ze zijn vernoemd naar vrouwelijke familieleden van de kunstenaar die de afgelopen jaren zijn overleden. De scherven symboliseren de menselijke kwetsbaarheid; de scherpe randen geven uitdrukking aan het verdriet over verloren dierbaren. In deze tentoonstelling worden de schervenvazen gepresenteerd in een plantscape – een term die de kunstenaar vaker gebruikt voor installaties van middelgroot formaat, iets tussen tuin en landschap in. Al het in deze plantscape verwerkte materiaal is al enige tijd dood en heeft daardoor zijn sublieme kleur en schoonheid verloren. Wat resteert is de essentiële schoonheid, die grotendeels bestaat uit vorm en textuur. In het corona-tijdperk worden ook wij teruggeworpen op wat essentieel is. Veel dingen die kleur en franje verlenen aan ons bestaan, zijn onmogelijk en aan banden gelegd. Een groot deel van het gebruikte materiaal is afkomstig uit het atelier van de kunstenaar, die een botanisch archief bijhoudt van plantaardige materialen die hij toepast in installaties en kunstwerken. Dit archiefmateriaal is aangevuld met enkele bomen en struiken uit het publieke domein die gestorven zijn tijdens de corona-lockdown, toen groenbedrijven niet in staat waren de noodzakelijke zorg te verlenen. |
EN Social distancing is the key practice in corona times. Kissing, hugging and even handshaking have been banned for the time being. Social distancing makes all of us untouchable. Untouchability, all be it of another kind, is also the motive of the three shard vases, bought by Boijmans Van Beuningen in 2018. They are named after female family members of the artist who have died in recent years. The shards represent human vulnerability while their sharp edges express the grief over loved lost ones. For this exhibition the shard vases are presented in a plantscape – a term frequently used by the artist for installations that outsize conventional plant arrangements in containers but that do not yet classify as landscaping. All the trees, plants and flowers used in this plantscape have been dead for some time and have therefore lost their sublime color and beauty. What remains is their essential beauty, which is largely one of shape and texture. In corona times, we are also thrown back to what is essential as lots of things that add color to our existence are stripped or restrained. Much of the material used in this plantscape comes from the artist, who maintains a botanical archive of materials from previous installations. This archive material is supplemented with some roadside trees and shrubs that have died during the corona lockdown because maintenance workers were temporarily forced to stay at home. |
