DE GEKROONDE KWELGEEST
Het coronavirus dicteert de samenleving en daarom verdient het een standbeeld. Omdat corona kroon betekent, zie ik het virus als een gekroond wezen. Maar niet een rijzige gestalte die kracht uitdrukt, maar eerder een nietige kwelgeest met een onschuldige uitstraling. Associatief bracht dat beeld mij bij een reclamefiguurtje van Coca-Cola uit de jaren 40 en 50: een hoogblond, elfachtig jongetje (‘sprite’) met een kroonkurk als hoofddeksel! Nu wilde het toeval dat ik tijdens de lockdown, net als veel andere mensen, mijn huis heb opgeruimd. Tot de spullen die weg konden behoorde een toeristisch prul uit mijn ouderlijk huis. Het betrof een miniatuurversie van het kalkstenen standbeeld van het Drentse jongetje Bartje (1954) van Suze Boschma-Berkhout. Door een raadselachtige ingeving heb ik Bartje een kroonkurk op zijn blonde kuif gedrukt en daarmee werd hij plotseling de gekroonde kwelgeest. Uiteraard behoeft elk beeld een landschap aan zijn voeten. Het landschap waarover mijn gekroonde kwelgeest heerst is woest, doods en ledig en ademt dezelfde sfeer als het imaginaire landschap dat ik ontwierp voor de tentoonstelling Dissident Gardens (2018).
THE CROWNED SPRITE
The coronavirus reigns supreme and so it deserves a statue. Because corona means crown I visualize the virus as a crowned being. But not a crowned being of great stature and physical power but rather a small figure with an innocent appearance. Associatively that image brought me to a brand figure of Coca-Cola from the 1940s and 1950s: a high-blond, elfin boy or sprite with a hat in the form of a crown cap! Coincidentally, like so many other people, I decluttered my house during the corona lockdown. One of the things to dispose of was a tourist figurine from my childhood. It was a miniature version of the limestone statue of Bartje, a fairheaded boy from Drenthe created by Suze Boschma-Berkhout in 1954. In an enigmatic flash I pressed this figurine a crown cap on its head whereupon it instantly became the crowned sprite. Naturally, every statue needs a landscape at its feet. The landscape that my crowned sprite reigns over is savage, dead and empty. It breathes the same spirit as the imaginary landscape I designed for the exhibition Dissident Gardens (2018).
